From EYFS to the Na琀椀onal
Curriculum
In Recep琀椀on, your child followed the Early Years Founda琀椀on Stage (EYFS) framework. This
curriculum places a strong emphasis on explora琀椀on, crea琀椀vity, social development, and
founda琀椀onal learning through play. It celebrates the individuality of each child9s pace and
encourages learning through ac琀椀ve discovery, curiosity, and movement. Year 1 introduces
the Na琀椀onal Curriculum, and with it, a more formal learning structure. Lessons are
琀椀metabled, tasks are more structured, and children are introduced to subject speci昀椀c
learning including:
-
English (phonics, reading, wri琀椀ng)
Mathema琀椀cs (number, opera琀椀ons, problem-solving)
Science, History, Geography
Art, Music, PE and PSHE
While this shi昀琀 may sound daun琀椀ng, our schools implement a 8transi琀椀on phase9 at the
beginning of Year 1 to ease the change. These early weeks s琀椀ll include opportuni琀椀es for
play and choice-based learning, gradually introducing more structured elements over 琀椀me.
The aim is not to abruptly shi昀琀 from play to textbooks, but rather to layer new expecta琀椀ons
on top of the skills and con昀椀dence children developed during their recep琀椀on year.
