Developing
Independence and
Responsibility
In Year 1, children are expected to become increasingly selfsu昀케cient in both classroom rou琀椀nes and personal care. You can
help prepare your child by building independence at home.
Start with everyday tasks: ge琀ng dressed, brushing teeth, packing their
school bag, and 琀椀dying up toys. These seemingly small ac琀椀vi琀椀es build selfcon昀椀dence and help children manage classroom expecta琀椀ons such as
organising their books or pu琀ng on their PE kit without support.
Encourage your child to follow step-by-step rou琀椀nes independently. Use
checklists or visual cues to remind them what they need for the day;
lunchbox, water bo琀琀le, reading book, coat. Le琀ng your child take ownership
of small responsibili琀椀es at home builds the con昀椀dence they need to manage
the growing expecta琀椀ons at school.
Foster curiosity:
Try not to rush to do everything for them, even when it9s faster. Instead,

Building self-help skills and responsibility supports a
smooth adjustment to increased classroom
expecta琀椀ons.
