Suppor琀椀ng Early Literacy –
Phonics, Reading and Wri琀椀ng
In Year 1, literacy becomes a major focus, with the Phonics Screening Check
taking place in the summer term. Your child will build on their early reading and
wri琀椀ng skills through structured phonics lessons and extended opportuni琀椀es to
write. You can help by reading with your child daily. Let them read aloud to you,
even if it9s just a few pages, and take turns. Encourage them to sound out
unfamiliar words using phonics skills, rather than guessing. Talk about the story,
ask ques琀椀ons, and explore vocabulary. This helps with comprehension and
vocabulary development.
Wri琀椀ng at this age is about expression
more than spelling perfec琀椀on. Let your
child write shopping lists, thank-you
notes, cap琀椀ons for pictures, or even
create their own mini-books. Provide a
variety of wri琀椀ng materials and
celebrate their crea琀椀vity. Encourage
proper pencil grip and posture but keep
it light and playful. Literacy grows from
interest, not pressure. Make reading and
wri琀椀ng part of your child9s daily life.
